In the Heraklion prefecture near the city of Heraklion is located the cave of Agia Paraskevi also known as the skoteino cave. It is approximately 22 kilometers from the city of Heraklion near the village of Skoteino (hence the name Skoteino). The Skoteino cave is considered to be one of the largest caves in Heraklion prefecture.
In the ancient times the cave was used for various religious rituals by the Minoan civilization and later it was used as a worshiping place by the Christians.
In the entrance of the cave these is a chapel dedicated to Agia Paraskevi that was built over the ruins of an older chapel. Deep inside the cave there are various altars from the ancient times, used for worshiping the gods.
The Skoteino cave is about 10 meters high and 27 meters wide located at an altitude of 225 meters, the cave it self is not officially open to public due to danger for the visitors from its depth.
You can rent a car from Heraklion and drive to the village Skoteino and from there visit the amazing cave of Skoteino!
