The airport of Heraklion is the main and busiest airport of Crete. In fact it is the second busiest airport in Greece. It is named “Nikos Kazantzakis” after Heraklion native Nikos Kazantzakis, a famous Greek writer. The Heraklion airport first opened in the year 1939.
The airport is located around 5 kilometers to the east of the city of Heraklion and it is near Nea Alikarnassos.
In order to cover the all increasing needs, a new airport is being constructed at a new site in the region of Kastelli and it is scheduled to open its gates the summer of 2015 according to plan.
