Ierapetra is located to the southeast of Crete and is the most important town on the south coast of Crete. According to the last census its population is approximately 16,000 and is the fourth largest town in Crete. Ierapetra means Sacred stone, Iera= sacred and petra=stone. Ierapetra was colonized in the Minoan era, later it was occupied by other Greeks and it was the last remaining free city in Crete until it was conquered by the Romans.
According to the Hellenic National Meteorological Service (HNMS) Ierapetra is the warmest city in Greece with an annual average temperature of 20,1 °C, also it is the sunniest city in Greece with an average of 3101 hours of sunshine per year.
Ierapetra also has many beautiful beaches that have been awarded many times.
Ierapetra doesn’t have direct connection with an airport or a port. The nearest airports are in Sitia (59 km) and Heraklion airport (94 km) and the nearest ports are also in Sitia and Heraklion. You can rent a car directly from the airport or the port and visit the beautiful Ieraperta.
