Matala is a village in South Crete in the bay of Messara, a very beautiful and picturesque spot, just 65 km from Heraklion city and near Phaistos. The village of Matala became popular when in the 1960’s arrived there hippies from all over the world to live in the famous caves of Matala located next to the beach. Many of them were famous artist and singers of the 60’s who were inspired from the beauty of Matala and wrote song about the place and its magic.
Today, thousands of tourists come from around the world, to see the legendary place and to taste some of the charm of the past.
Matala is ideal for those who want to spend their holidays close to beautiful beaches, great archaeological sites and many villages that maintain their traditional color. The village have lost most of its traditional color, but close to Matala, are traditional villages such as Sivas and Kamilari while in a radius of 20 km, you will discover much more.
Matala is not offered for nightlife and partying, but there are enough bars to have your drink and listen to music by the sea. For those interested in the history of Crete, Phaistos, Agia Triada and Gortyn city are very close to Matala. The beach of Matala is wonderful and there are sports facilities as well as activities for children.
The road leading to Matala is excellent, asphalted and very well marked.
