Rent a car Heraklion and visit Pachia Ammos!
Pachia Ammos is located 20km east of Agios Nikolaos, on the road connecting Agios Nikolaos to Sitia and Ierapetra. It is a large village, built on the north side of the narrowest part of Crete. The village is named after the great beach which unfolds in front of the village and has thick sand.
Pachia Ammos was built on the ancient city of Minoa, which was the old harbor. The most famous archaeological attraction is the Minoan cemetery and the settlement of Gournia, 2km west. Here were found skeletons in pots and sarcophagi.
Also 4km south of the village, you can visit the early Minoan settlement of Vassiliki which flourished between 2600 and 2300 BC. The Basilica is considered the precursor of major Minoan palaces and cities. From the Basilica you can drive 2km east, to the traditional village of Monastiraki, the old watermills and the church of St. Stephen. Nearby is the output of the imposing gorge of Ha.
