The town of Agios Nikolaos in Crete besides its unique beauty and its picturesque scenery is also well known for the famous small lake located at the center of the town.
The official name of the lake is “Lake Voulismeni” although the local population refer to it as just “the lake”. Voulismeni was a sweetwater lake that now is connected to the sea. Voulismeni has a circular shape with a diameter of 137 meters and depth approximately 64 meters.
The lake was connected with the harbour of Agios Nikolaos by a channel that was constructed in 1870. You can see the lake with a panoramic view from park situated just above it.
According to local legends the lake Voulismeni is bottomless, that legend is actually based on its impressively disproportional high depth compared to its width. With a 64 meters depth on only 134 meters width!
The distance between Heraklion city and Agios Nikolaos is about 63 kilometers. You can visit Agios Nikolaos and the lake Voulismeni with a rental car for Autohire Heraklion and enjoy the trip!
